London Wall Publishing

A Gold IPPY award for The Echoes of Love

We were delighted to discover that London Wall Publishing had been awarded Gold in the Independent Publisher Book Awards’ Romance category, for our debut publication, The Echoes of Love.
The IPPYs were launched in 1996 with the aim of rewarding the very best independently published books each year. ‘Independent’ is defined as:

  • Independently owned and operated
  • Operated by a foundation or university
  • Long-time independents that became incorporated but operate autonomously and publish fewer than 50 titles a year

So, that means hot competition for an award – 5,600 entries in 2014!

As cited on the IPPY website, the judges look for ‘dedication not just to quality writing and publishing, but also willingness to go beyond the confines of traditional publishing.’ They explain: ‘Each year's IPPY Award-winning titles represent a list of authors, editors, publishers, illustrators and photographers who aren't afraid of change and that's why their wonderful, heartfelt, and inspired writing and publishing is so worthy of our awards.’

The judging criteria was as follows:

  • First impression – front, back and inside – would you pull it from the bookstore or library shelf?
  • Design – cover design, typeface, message, front and back – does the cover make you want to look inside?
  • Interior layout, typeface, illustrations – is it easy to read; is it a pleasure to look at?
  • Originality – is it a fresh approach?  Has it been done too much?
  • Use of language – grammar, style, voice – does it flow? Does it make you want to keep reading?
  • Message delivery – is the message promised by the cover being delivered, and in a compelling way?
  • Relevance – is the book pertinent to our time?  Is this a message that should be heard?

Fiona Marsh, London Wall Publishing’s Project Manager, travelled to the BookExpo America in New York to pick up the award.

We’re proudly adding the IPPY award to The Echoes of Love book cover. It’s wonderful to see independent publishing gaining respect and recognition through such awards. And it’s a real honour to be recognised for our work.

Launched in 1996 and conducted each year to honor the year's best independently published books, the "IPPY" Awards recognize merit in a broad range of subjects and reward authors and publishers who "take chances and break new ground." Independent publishers, along with independent booksellers, have long held an important role in the world of books, offering an alternative to "the big five" conglomerated media publishers.
